From our perspective, one of the most positive things about women's rugby is the relative parity. As we saw this summer Ireland can beat New Zealand, Canada can make a World Cup final, any team can pull off an upset on the World Series and a team of mostly college players, Old Blue, can make a fantastic run to the National Club 7s final. At the same time, it also makes it very difficult to single out an MVP. After looking at the whole picture of the summer we felt that there was no question that Nia Williams should be our choice for the Women's Club 7s Player of the Year.
Williams was at the heart of the extremely strong San Diego Surfers side that took home the National Club 7s. Even with the parity in the women's game the Surfers went 6-0 on the weekend with Williams playing the role of playmaker and setting up her teammates. Those natural playmaking skills are very hard to come by and for a player who is only 21 it's a positive for her future. It was to the surprise of no one she ended up winning the MVP award for the tournament. Additionally, Williams also played for the Stars over the summer. All in all, we couldn't think of a better player for this year's award.
