Hayden Smith Released, Nate Ebner On The Bubble

In a tweet sent out late this evening the New York Jets have announced that they have released former Eagle and Saracens lock Hayden Smith. The former basketball player was originally not on the Jets active roster last season but earning his way onto the team late in the year, playing in several matches. He recorded one catch for 16 yards. The General Manager that had brought Smith into the team was let go at the end of last season. He was released to make room for Mike Goodson, who is returning for suspension.

At this point another team could pick up Smith. He showed a lot of promise during his one season with the Jets and another team could sign him to their roster, or one of their non-roster positions. It is also possible that Smith could return to rugby having shown promise while with the Eagles and with Saracens. That option would certainly delight U.S. fans.

As for other ex-rugby players in the NFL, Johnson Bademosi looks for certain to keep his spot with the Cleveland Browns while Nate Ebner is on the bubble with the New England Patriots.
