One of the greatest rugby players of all time and the face of rugby in the modern era, Jonah Lomu, has passed away. According to former All Blacks doctor John Mayhew the death was unexpected. Lomu was 40 years old and leaves behind a young family. From making his test debut in 1994 to retiring in 2002 Lomu scored 43 times in 73 appearances for the All Blacks. He was the dominant player in the 1995 World Cup with several magical moments, including his run over try against England. He was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2011.
Lomu was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a disease of the kidneys, in 1995. The condition finally forced him to stop playing in 2002. He made a couple of comebacks but had a kidney transplant in 2004. Recently Lomu has been traveling the globe as an ambassador for rugby and was there when rugby was inducted as an Olympic sport once again.
