by Ted Hardy,
It took four years longer than most had expected, but Cal finally got the monkey off their back and have taken home their first 7s title by claiming the 2013 Collegiate Rugby Championship. It wasn't easy as Cal was pushed to the final whistle by a spirited second half comeback from Life. In the end, the 19-0 deficit that Cal put on Life was too much to surmount as Life fell short 19-14.
Life made a desperate second half comeback that brought them within a try of taking down the mighty Cal squad. After drawing the score to 19-14 with less than thirty seconds left in the game, Life needed to reclaim the restart in order to have a chance to steal victory. Life was unable to pressure the restart and Cal claimed it cleanly, controlled possession and kicked for touch ending their 7s drought.
Cal reached the final after a 26-12 quarterfinal win over Arizona and a very entertaining 33-21 victory over UCLA in the semifinals. UCLA ended the title reign of Dartmouth in the quarterfinals with a last second 19-17 victory. Life battled their way to the title match with a 31-17 victory over Kutztown in the quarterfinals and then a convincing 43-7 rout of Navy in the semifinals.
A expected, the CRC saved their best for the last day of the tournament with a number of great games and nail biting finishes to keep the crowd engaged and excited.
Delaware claimed the Plate Championship with a surprisingly close 12-10 win over a scrappy Notre Dame side. Northeastern won the Bowl title with a close 17-12 victory over Virginia Tech.
In the Women's CRC, Penn State kept their pool play momentum going as they rolled to the CRC Women's title with a 31-5 win over rival Ohio State played inside of PPL Park. For the weekend, Penn State outscored their opponents by a dominating margin of 168-15. Penn State defeated Texas 17-5 to reach the final while Ohio State took down Georgia Tech 29-5 to reach the finals.
The CRC continues to grow and seems to have found a home in Philadelphia. The overall attendance came in just under 20,000 for the entire weekend which was a 6% increase from 2012. It took years before the USA Sevens really began to build traction with their IRB World Series stop. Prior to moving the tournament to Las Vegas, the tournament was getting that type of number in San Diego. Now three years into their run in Philadelphia, they appear to be building something special with the CRC and teams are genuinely excited to be a part of the tournament.
