PRO Rugby POTW, Standings, & Scoring Leaders

It's time once again to check in on PRO Rugby standings, attendance, scoring leaders, and name our Player of the Week. There was only one match last weekend and there will be only one this weekend but there was still movement in several categories. Additionally, this will be the only time until the end of the season that all teams have played the same number of matches and it just happens to be the halfway point.

Player of the Week: Will Magie

We could have given this week's award to Kurt Morath who almost single-footedly (see what we did there) kicked San Diego to a win over Denver. However, there was no other choice this week than to give it to Denver's Will Magie for his excellent kick down pitch that Martin Knoetze recovered for what became the winning try. It was a phenomenal kick and exemplified how much Magie has grown just this season in terms of his awareness and playmaking ability. Magie is getting is first run of steady game time for awhile and it's paying lots of dividends for himself personally and for Denver.

Take the jump to read more.
Standings

No changes in the standings this week except that Denver increased their lead. They now have more than a bonus point win advantage over San Diego. The loss for San Diego has to sting because if they would have won they would have taken over the top spot. Ohio are the next closest side but they are ten points in back of Denver.

Of San Diego's six matches, five have been at home, by far the most in PRO Rugby. So far the attendance has been good although the crowd showed some fatigue over the weekend with their lowest showing yet. These numbers should come with the usual disclaimer that almost all of the numbers are estimates.

With an 18 point display Kurt Morath has increased his lead at the top of the scoring chart. He's now nearly 20 points clear of Volney Rouse and he could top the 100 point mark this weekend in Ohio. Will Magie also added to his total and moved ahead of Mirco Bergamasco for third place. Sebastian Kalm, who leads the league with 7 tries, is the top non-kicker on the points leader board.

PRO Rugby Power Rankings: Denver Firmly At The Top

$
0
0

There are no changes in our PRO Rugby Power Rankings this weekend thanks to Denver's win over San Diego. However, Denver are much more firmly entrenched in the number one spot and it's going to take something special to knock them off that the rest of the season.

1. Denver (6-0-0; LW: 1; beat San Diego 24-23): The win wasn't always assured and Denver had to get some late heroics but a win is a win and now they are the only unbeaten team halfway through the season and if things go their way are just four games away from clinching first place. Will Magie was fantastic on the weekend but so were players like Hanco Germishuys, Pedrie Wannenburg, Martin Knoetze, and others. They still have a long way to go the rest of the way and there are some warning signs but if they can continue to pull out wins that's all the matters. Up next: Bye

Take the jump to read more.
2. San Diego (4-2-0; LW: 2; lost to Denver 24-23): San Diego were so close to beating Denver and moving into first place. Now they find themselves more than a game back and with a lot of pressure to win out the rest of the season. Kurt Morath is helping with his boot and injuries have cost the team at times but they still need to find a way to beat Denver if they want to get back in the title race. Up next: Ohio

3. Ohio (3-3-0; LW: 3; Bye): The Aviators face a big, big match against San Diego this weekend. A win and they move into second place. A loss and they are all but destined to finish third or lower. Up next: San Diego

4. San Francisco (1-5-0; LW: 4; Bye): San Francisco are in the middle of a big rest period which probably doesn't come at the best time for the team considering they just picked up their first win of the season. Up next: Bye

5. Sacramento (1-5-0; LW: 5; Bye): Sacramento are also having some time off. That's probably a good thing for a team searching for answers. Up next: Bye

San Diego, Ohio Name Starters

With the summer internationals underway PRO Rugby rosters are being impacted with some teams having to change out several players. That's especially true for San Diego who have lost their entire front-row. Jake Ilnicki and Hubert Buydens are with Canada this weekend as they play Japan (Ilnicki will start) while Joe Taufete'e is in camp with the Eagles. That means that young All-American Mason Peterson will get his first start alongside Epi Kalamani at prop and Mike Sosene-Feagai will start at hooker. In the backs Ryan Matyas, Pono Haitsuka, and Kalai Konrad will all get starts with Phil Mackenzie, Mike Te'o, and Taku Ngwenya away.

Ohio aren't as hard hit by international call-ups as San Diego but they are missing some players. Angus MacLellan is in Eagles camp. He'll be replaced by Demecus Beach at prop. Kyle Baillie is away and starting with Canada today. He's replaced by Ryan McTiernan. Shaun Davies, who has been in Eagles camp was released for the weekend and will be on the bench. In other changes on the team Taylor Howden will get his chance at fly-half while Dominic Waldouck starts at center with Riekert Hattingh also making his debut.

Women Eagles Picked For Summer Series

Head coach Pete Steinberg has picked his team as they get ready for next month's Super Series in Salt Lake. With the World Cup just a year away this will be one of the last major opportunities for the team to get playing time together.

It should come as no surprise that the bulk of the team played in last year's Super Series in Canada. Veterans like Jen Lui, Deven Owsiany, Jane Paar, Sam Pankey, Hope Rogers, Kimber Rozier, and others will all be on the roster. At the same time there is some new blood into the team. Asinate Serevi and Nicole Strasko have been standouts at Central Washington and Life respectively and they both come into the team.

With matches against Canada, England, and France you can expect the squad to be rotated to allow Steinberg to get a good look at his whole team.

Preview: Ohio Hosts San Diego In Must-Win

$
0
0

It's going to become a theme week after week for the rest of the season but Sunday's match-up between Ohio and San Diego is a must-win for each side. With Denver firmly at the top of the table with a perfect record the 3-3 Ohio Aviators and the 4-2 San Diego Breakers can't afford to drop any more points if they want to challenge Denver during the second half of the season. That is especially true for Ohio seeing as if they drop below .500 they are all but out the rest of the way.

Impacting each team going into the match is the number of players missing on international duty. San Diego are missing their entire front row either to the U.S. or Canada as well as several key players in their backs. Ohio are missing less players but they are missing players that have been crucial to their success so far this season, including Angus MacLellan and Kyle Baillie. How well each side can adapt to these absences and show depth is going to go a long way to helping them pull out a win.

Take the jump to read more.
If each side was at full strength there aren't a lot of differences between the two, however, with the absences it throws off the balance. Hubert Buydens, Jake Ilnicki, and Joe Taufete'e have been coming on well over the last few weeks since the introduction of Ilnicki but they are all gone. In their place come in Mason Peterson, Mike Sosene-Feagai, and Epi Kalamani. Sosene-Feagai has good experience while Peterson is fresh off his All-American experience and has been impressive for a young player. That said, they are coming up against a very front row in Jaime Mackintosh, Dylan Fawsitt, and Demecus Beach. It would have been even more solid if MacLellan were on the team. If the Ohio front row can earn penalties at the scrum they can click over the scoreboard. For San Diego it's about keeping things even and giving the rest of their team a chance.

San Diego are also missing a number of their backs, including Phil Mackenzie, Mikey Te'o, and Taku Ngwenya. All three of those players have been fantastic in recent weeks and will be missed. Even though those players are gone they have good replacements in Ryan Matyas, Pono Haitsuka, and Kalei Konrad. Matyas slide in the centers with Andrew Suniula while Haitsuka is on the wing with a recovered Stanfill. Konrad gets the nod at fullback.

Ohio have undergone some changes in the backs themselves but with an eye to improvement. Robbie Shaw gets the nod at scrumhalf while Taylor Howden will start at fly-half. Howden has been excellent for the Denver Barbarians in the past but will be needed to take a step forward even more against San Diego. Matt Hughston steps in the centers along with Dominic Waldouck. Hughston has played plenty of center in his career while Waldouck brings lots of foreign experience.

Where this match may turn is with the kickers. It's expected to be warm and muggy and even though the fitness of the teams has improved it's going to take a toll and some players might make mistakes. We all know that Kurt Morath can kick and pick up points. More, it's going to be up to Howden, Shaw, or Shaun Davies, if he comes off the bench, to make that effort.

Outside of the kickers key players that could make the difference include Sebastian Kalm for Ohio and Sione Tuihalamaka for San Diego. Kalm has been the leading try scorer this season and has done that by finding himself in the right spots at the right time. Tuihalamaka has been one of the surprise players this season who has only gotten better as the season has progressed. With some players gone he'll need to step up to an even bigger role.

It's going to be close but we think the front row of Ohio is going to make a difference. You can tune in at 3:00 p.m. et/12:00 p.m. pt on prorugby.org or One World Sports.

Ohio Romp At Home Once Again, Beat San Diego

$

Memorial Park has become a fortress for Ohio. For third time this season the Aviators have scored over 50 points in a massive win, this time a 55-29 victory over San Diego. It was an important win for Ohio who needed the result to give themselves a chance to catch Denver at the top of the table. They still face an uphill battle but with two matches left against Denver, including one at Memorial Park, they have a chance. The same could be said of San Diego, who were within a whisker of beating Denver last weekend, but with two losses in a row and the team still missing their internationals they don't have momentum on their side. Each team picked up a bonus point which means they are tied on 22 points. Denver have 27 points.

Ohio have gotten out to hot starts at home all season and it continued yet again. When San Diego failed to field a deep clearing kick Spike Davis was there to pick it up and pass out to Dominic Waldouck to give the debutant the first of his three tries just four minutes in. Ryan Matyas would give San Diego some hope early with a nice run but he was caught and soon Robbie Shaw was able to connect on a penalty to put Ohio up 10-0 with just ten minutes played.

Take the jump to read more.
Injuries took their toll early on both sides. Matt Hughston, who made the move to the centers for Ohio this week, broke his jaw. Andrew Suniula and Cecil Garber were lost for San Diego which just added to their missing list with many players away in Eagles or Canada camp.

Matyas would have another run that put San Diego in position again. This time they gained a penalty that Kurt Morath made to cut the lead to 10-3. However, that was quickly cancelled out but yet another Ohio try. It began when the Breakers made a forward pass. From the ensuing scrum Ohio worked the ball out to the win where Alex Elkins powered over the defense. Shaw would make the conversion and the Aviators held a 17-3 lead.

San Diego did catch a break when Jaime Mackintosh was sent to the bin after some rough stuff. With the man advantage the Breakers used a line out to go through several phases with their forwards before sending it out to Kalei Konrad for San Diego's first try.

Elkins then picked up his second try of the match. San Diego sent a clearing kick deep but straight into the hands of Ohio who simply passed it out to Elkins who was barely touched on his way to score. It was a big try, especially with Mackintosh still in the bin. However, San Diego did well to respond. With three minutes left in the half substitute Ben Leatigaga scooped up a Morath grubber for the try. With Morath's conversion the match would be as close as it would get at 22-17.

Not to be outdone Ohio worked hard to once again push near the line. Through several phases they were stood up by the San Diego defense but once they swung the ball out to their backs it found the hands of Spike Davis who wouldn't be denied the score. 27-17 at halftime.

Early into the second half a break from Sebastian Kalm was then fed to Ahmad Harajly, who then found Waldouck for the score. At 34-17 the match was at a critical junction. It would have been close heading toward the end but an excellent try line stand from Ohio prevented San Diego from grabbing an important try. Instead, it was Taylor Howden who through a dummy at the other end to extend the lead to 41-17 with 16 minutes to go.

Straight from the restart Ohio scored again with Waldouck benefitting. The Aviators then went over the 50 point mark when Davis added his second. San Diego made a late push getting a second try from Leatigaga and then one from Zach Pangelinan on debut to make the final score 55-29.

San Diego will head home to face San Francisco in their final match at Torero Stadium this season while Ohio heads to Denver.

Eagles Trim Camp Roster

Head coach John Mitchell has trimmed his camp roster down to 28. Shaun Davies, Ollie Kilifi, Deion Mikesell, Brodie Orth, and Aladdin Schirmer have been released to head back to their clubs or colleges. Davies already spent last weekend playing for Ohio against San Diego. The releases see some positions get thinner in camp. With Davies gone that leaves Nate Augspurger, Shalom Suniula, and Mike Te'o as options. Peter Tiberio and Steve Tomasin call also fill in.

At prop with the departure of Kilifi that leaves Chris Baumann, Titi Lamositele, Angus MacLellan, and Ben Tarr as options. Tom Coolican and Joe Taufete'e can also fill in if needed. For Orth and Schirmer the depth at lock and back-row meant they probably weren't going to see much time. Mikesell is still young and even if he didn't make it the experience will be a positive for him.

Is A U-23 Competition The Next Step For American Rugby?

We're in a slight lull between the end of the college and club season and with less than a week before the Eagles play their first summer international. Usually these times are great opportunities to write out some ideas that probably won't happen but hopefully stimulate discussion. Today's topic: the merits of a summer U-23 competition for the best players in the country.

Here is how it would work: the four to six team league would start in June and finish in August with each team only playing six matches followed by playoffs. In order to cut down on expenses the league would be based in one geographical area. In this case we'll go with four teams the Pacific Northwest seeing as that's where we are based. Teams would be in Seattle, Portland, Bellingham, and Spokane. All of the teams are within a day trip of each other making the bus and food the only travel expense.

Take the jump to read more.
Additionally, because the season is short arrangements could be made to temporarily house players in the homes of the rugby community in exchange for a small stipend. This is done with hockey players where a family takes them in and gets something like $250 per player per month. Assuming 25 players at each location that's about $20,000 per team for the whole summer.

That won't be the only costs, however. There are field rentals, coaches, equipment, and so much more. Fans shouldn't get the impression that this would be a money maker. In all likelihood there would probably only be around 500 fans at each match. Charging $10 a ticket over the course of three home matches that only brings in $15,000 and probably not even that as you'll have ticket giveaways, etc. Still, if you spread the costs over the league and then have the players fund part of their stipend you might keep costs down.

The players for the competition would come from various college and clubs throughout the country that are seeking to gain higher level rugby. It's no secret that teams like BYU, St. Mary's, Cal, and Life have a lot of depth to their rosters and also see a lot of high level matches. While this tournament would certainly benefit from their presence they are more known quantities. This tournament would be for players that maybe don't see as much high-level action with their college and club teams and are looking for some more exposure and a higher-level of play. If you think about it, that's 100 players getting something they wouldn't otherwise. That's only going to help PRO Rugby and the Eagles.

Some of you that follow soccer may be familiar with this model. The PDL has been around for over 20 years and has consistently brought in college players from different teams to various locations around the country for a summer of a dozen matches. They have several divisions around the country but most are structured for teams so they don't have to stay overnight, saving costs. Players also keep their amateur status playing in the competition. Many players that played with small colleges or weren't even in college, have been discovered by MLS playing in the competition. It's up the level of play in the country, especially as college soccer doesn't always deliver the best standard of play or the most matches. The PDL isn't perfect and teams fold every year due to the costs but some have made it and actually have thousands of people show up to watch their matches.

It's no secret that there is a gap between players at the high school or college level and reaching the Eagles. The Junior All-Americans and College All-Americans have done a decent job in recent years and you have to give Alex Magleby a lot of credit for maximizing resources to give those teams quality time together. The All-American camps have been great at identifying players and now they are being tracked throughout the year. At the same time, there is plenty of evidence that when it comes to actual playing time not many players can take the step up. It's a major adjustment for them. This league would be an attempt to help bridge that gap by replacing one tour with now a whole season of high-level matches, and even more important, three months of full-time training. You could still have a tour but those players would now come in at a different level.

To remind you of what was noted at the beginning, this idea will likely never become reality. Going back the PDL example, soccer has been a varsity sport in America for a very long time and there are more fans that turn out to soccer matches than rugby matches. That makes the PDL more realistic than a similar rugby competition. Still, if ideas aren't put out there there it's hard to see if any stick. We just thought we'd pass this one along in case someone had $200,000 to spend to make American rugby better.

Who Will Start For The Eagles Against Italy?

$

0

The Eagles begin their Summer Series in just a few days against Italy at Avaya Stadium. While the team has had five matches under new head coach John Mitchell this is the first time he's had the opportunity to pick his own players for the most part and it will be the first time he'll have a chance to go up against a Tier I nation. Even during the ARC Mitchell showed that he's willing to shake things up in the name of results. That was evident once again when the likes of Brodie Orth, Shaun Davies, and Ollie Kilifi were all released from camp earlier in the week.

Put it all together and it might make it difficult to guess as to who is going to start against Italy but we're going to take a guess anyways. Overall, the team is missing veterans like Eric Fry, Samu Manoa (still with Toulon), Chris Wyles and Scott LaValla (retired), and a host of 7s players, but there still are enough key players to create a solid spine. Who fills in and puts their hand up as major players is going to be the bigger question.

Take the jump to read more.
Prop: Titi Lamositele, Angus MacLellan, Chris Baumann, Ben Tarr

With Eric Fry and Ollie Kilifi gone the Eagles are missing two of their top three props from the last couple of years. That leaves Titi Lamositele as the undisputed leader of the prop group and he's going to be counted on to do a lot these next two matches. He is an automatic starter. The question will be whether Chris Baumann, Angus MacLellan, or Ben Tarr join him? Given his form this season we're going to go with MacLellan. He has been outstanding and deserves his shot at the big time. Chris Baumann has come back from injury and has done well but at this level coming off that injury he might be better as a super sub. It may also be a case where a player like Joe Taufete'e moves from hooker to prop.

Hooker: James Hilterbrand

Mitchell has Tom Coolican, James Hilterbrand, and Joe Taufete'e at his disposal. As mentioned above, a player like Taufete'e may be used at prop but at least two of these players are going to be on the game day roster. Coolican and Taufete'e have had their injuries this year while Hilterbrand has been playing well enough to get a look from the Waratahs this year. We're going with him with Taufete'e as the back-up to add some versatility.

Lock: Greg Peterson, Cam Dolan

Lock is a position which we could see a player start that could also play in the back-row. Greg Peterson had a tremendous year for Glasgow. It would be a shock to see him not in the starting line-up. If Samu Manoa were available he and Peterson would make the top choice pairing but he's gone. Nate Brakeley played in the ARC and did well. James King has also played a fair bit of lock and could be a candidate to start. Todd Clever has played lock in the past as has Cam Dolan. Of those players we think that Dolan might be edged out in the back-row but is too valuable to leave off the starting sheet so we'll put him at lock. That said, King starting also wouldn't be a shock. Either way he should be on the bench for his versatility.

Back-row: Tony Lamborn, Andrew Durutalo, Todd Clever

In some ways picking the back-row is difficult due to depth but when you look at the names available three easily stand out: Tony Lamborn, Andrew Durutalo, and Todd Clever. You can't say enough about the year Durutalo had with the Sunwolves. He is a Super Rugby player and is an automatic starter for the Eagles. Lamborn has just come into the U.S. team but is also a Super Rugby player that was named the MVP of his winning ITM Cup team. Clever didn't have his greatest year club wise but he always turns out for the Eagles. Harry Higgins should get some time as a back-up but he could be squeezed out due to numbers.

Scrumhalf: Nate Augspurger, Mike Te'o

The battle for scrumhalf is going to be fierce. Both Shalom Suniula and Mike Te'o have see time at the position in the recent past. Te'o did alright during the ARC but is probably a better fit for fullback. Augspurger may have played mostly 7s over the last year and it's easy to forget his time with Old Blue but if you ask any of his coaches in New York they will tell you they thought he was the best scrumhalf in the country. We think he gets the nod.

Fly-half: AJ MacGinty

AJ MacGinty. End of list. Just kidding but also not. Everyone knows about MacGinty's season with Connacht but it all began with a strong showing for the Eagles in the World Cup. He starts. The question for fly-half is whether or not there is enough room on the bench for James Bird.

Center: Chad London, Thretton Palamo

Looking at the potential center names available it looks like Chad London and Thretton Palamo probably have the inside track to start. London has come on very strong over the last year and was one of the better Eagles during the ARC. Palamo has been playing 7s but was a big part of the Eagles World Cup team. Seth Halliman could shake things but either in the centers but probably more on the wing.

Wing: Blaine Scully, Taku Ngwenya

The choices here boil down to pretty much Blaine Scully, Taku Ngwenya, Luke Hume, and a player like Halliman, Steve Tomasin, or Peter Tiberio. Scully is a starter. Period. In a battle between Ngwenya and Hume we're going to go with Ngwenya simply based on experience. Having Hume come off the bench is a great option.

Fullback: Will Holder

It wouldn't shock us to see a player like Scully slide back to fullback or a player like Hume or Te'o. However, we think that Will Holder starts here against Italy. Holder has found a groove with the 7s team and provides a great presence in the air. He also had an educated boot that could be a back-up to MacGinty if he gets hurt.

So here are our (almost certainly wrong) guesses:

Forwards: Lamositele, Hilterbrand, MacLellan, Peterson, Dolan, Lamborn, Durutalo, Clever

Backs: Augspurger, MacGinty, Ngwenya, London, Palamo, Scully, Holder

Bench: Baumann, Tarr, Taufete'e, King, Brakeley, Halliman, Hume, Te'o
