Denver Offense Takes Off In Win Over San Diego

$
0
0

With the pressure on them to finish out the season with bonus point wins and set up a final showdown with Ohio the Denver Stampede delivered with a thumping 59-23 win over the San Diego Breakers in near 100 degree temperatures at CIBER Field. Denver were simply too lethal with their chances throughout the match while San Diego were found wanting in many aspects.

Even with the win the pressure is on Denver to continue to win, beginning with Sacramento their final home match of the season. For San Diego they are left looking for answers once again. After getting off to a great start they have now lost five matches in a row, including several with their full internationals available.

Max De Achaval got the first points on the board roughly seven minutes into the match. After being held up on an initial chance Denver used their scrum to set up their backs where De Achaval was there to convert.

Take the jump to read more.
San Diego weren't helped when talisman Kurt Morath went down with injury and was forced from the action. However, even with Morath on the pitch early the Breakers had a difficult time stopping anything Denver did.

Denver's second try was a result of more hard work from their forwards with Peter Dahl scoring. Kalei Konrad was able to get a couple of penalties for San Diego to halve the deficit at 12-6 but a try from Hanco Germishuys, who was fantastic once again on the day, in the 25th minute gave Denver a 19-6 lead. Timana Tahu made the initial break before finding the supporting Germishuys.

Credit to San Diego who scored a try from Joe Taufete'e to make the score 19-11. The Breakers did have some bright spots in the half but overall weren't able to put enough together to bother Denver much. Unfortunately for the Breakers they started the second half with 14 men as Andrew Suniula was shown a yellow card late for killing an opportunity. That allowed Zach Fenoglio to score a try to push the halftime score to 26-11.

Denver put any doubts about the match to rest with a strong spell early in the second half. A beautiful grubber from Magie bounced perfectly into the hands of Mike Garrity to start the second half scoring.   Zach Pangelinan did have a try for San Diego right after the Garrity try after Denver miss hit a clearance kick and San Diego were able to counter for the try but it was simply too much Denver. Germishuys, Fenoglio, and Garrity scored their second tries each to push Denver past 50 points. Timana Tahu and Ryan Matyas traded fantastic tries to end the match.

Denver will be happy that they were able to pick up the bonus point win. Had they been able to pick up more bonus points throughout the season they wouldn't feel as much pressure to stay with Ohio. For San Diego they will be left with more questions for answers as they travel to Boxer Stadium to face San Francisco.

Denver

Tries: De Achaval, Dahl, Germishuys (2), Fenoglio (2), Garrity (2), Tahu
Conversions: Magie (6), Malifa

San Diego

PRO Rugby POTW, Standings, & Scoring Leaders

It's time once again to take a look around the PRO Rugby standings, attendance, and point leaders as well as name our Player of the Week.

Player of the Week: Will Magie

It was once again a week in PRO Rugby in which there were a lot of players to choose from for our Player of the Week. Denver themselves had several strong choices but for us Will Magie was the big standout. Not only did he have a great day from the boot in terms of putting up points but he also showed great class on a couple of grubber's that led directly to tries. Overall, it's not just the match against San Diego, but it's been a string of matches that has seen Magie excel. He's one of the players that have really adapted to the competition and helped themselves. It wouldn't shock us to see him get an Eagles call-up at some point.

Standings

Ohio are still at the top of the table and will be there for at least another week. Entering the week then needed to pick up a bonus point win over Sacramento and they did just that. They now sit on 42 points with only one match remaining. Denver also needed to earn a bonus point win, which they did. With two matches in hand they sit six points behind Ohio. We are still on track for a winner-take-all match to finish the season.

Take the jump to read more.

Denver also saw a big improvement in their offense over the weekend. They've struggled to pick up bonus points this season--hence why Ohio is right there despite having two more losses--but that wasn't a problem against San Diego. They are now averaging 32 points a game. That is still behind Ohio's remarkable 40 points per match.

Defensively, both Ohio and Denver have slipped a little but not like San Diego. They have now given up the second most points in the competition although they have played one more match than both San Francisco and Sacramento. San Diego average 32.8 points given up per match. That defense is largely to blame for their now five match losing streak. It's still going to be difficult for either San Francisco or Sacramento to catch San Diego in the standings but it's still odd to think of the Breakers potential finishing at the bottom of the table after their strong start.

Attendance

As always these numbers should be taken as guesses at best. These are not official numbers and we're purely going off our own estimations.

The two strongest teams in terms of attendance had matches over the weekend but each team had their lowest crowd of the season. The California State Fair proved to be more of a distraction than help to the Express while the hot temperatures in Denver continue to make an impact. Still, Sacramento has kept their average above 2000 while Denver is just barely below. The overall league attendance has now dropped to just below 1700.

Scoring Leaders

Kurt Morath wasn't able to add to his point lead over the weekend as he came out early with an injury. Second place Volney Rouse didn't add to his total either as San Francisco had the weekend off. Third place Will Magie did earn points and now has 81 on the season. Four behind is Mirco Bergamasco who is just one point ahead of Shaun Davies. Spike Davis is the first non-kicker on the list with a whopping 70 points. That is what happens when you lead the league with 14 tries.

Canada Corner: Middleton Not Renewed, CRC Underway

It's time to take a look a some news and notes from our neighbors to the north.

Middleton Out As 7s Coach

After Canada failed to qualify for the Olympics a review of the program was promised. At least part of that review is in and it's not good news for coach Liam Middleton. Rugby Canada announced today that Middleton's contract would not be renewed.  Middleton came to the job after Geraint John had left but didn't arrive until just before the season and he inherited a team in the middle of transition. In the end it was too much and it cost him his job.

According to Patrick Johnston of The Province (who you should all be following for your Canada related news--Twitter here, Facebook here) some players also disagreed with Middleton's style. Canada will now be looking for a coach ahead of the season but it's going to be a difficult position to fill.

Take the jump to read more.

Women's Team Named For Rio

Prior to Middleton being let go the biggest news of the week was the announcement of the women's team that will represent Canada in Rio. After the announcement all most people could talk about was the non-selection of Magali Harvey, a former World Rugby Player of the Year. Recovery from injuries and her overall fit in the team are the main reasons head coach John Tait left her off the team. Even without Harvey the team is absolutely stacked. Jen Kish, Ghislaine Landry, Kayle Moleschi, Ashley Steacy, and the list goes on of great players. The team is easily a favorite to medal in Rio.

Squad: Britt Benn, Hannah Darling, Bianca Farella, Jen Kish, Ghislaine Landry, Megan Lukan, Kayla Moleschi, Karen Paquin, Kelly Russell, Ashley Steacy, Natasha Watcham-Roy, Charity Williams

Women 15s Ranked #2

Thanks to their dominance at the recent Super Series the Canadian 15s team has moved from 4th in the world to second. Fitting as that is where they finished at the World Cup in 2014. They absolutely controlled the Super Series despite missing their key 7s players and a few others. For reference, the Women Eagles moved down to seventh from sixth.

Wolf Pack Lead CRC

The Canadian Rugby Championship, which is arguably the strongest 15s competition outside of PRO Rugby in North America, is halfway finished and the Prairie Wold Pack sit at the top of the standings. Last year's champions beat their western rivals the BC Bears 25-17 on Vancouver Island last week. That moves them to 2-0 with 9 points. The Ontario Blues are next in the table with 5 points followed by the Atlantic Rock with 4. The Bears have only one point. Things will pick back up in a few weeks as the Bears and the Wolf Pack head out East to place the Rock and the Blues.

Press Release

Salt Lake City, UT—Rugby Utah and USA Touch are joining forces again to kick-off America’s first and leading Touch Rugby League.

With divisions for the Men’s Elite and Corporate Co-Ed the Touch Rugby League is an opportunity for rugby and non-rugby enthusiasts to participate in America’s fastest growing sport and the newest Olympic sport.

“The Touch Rugby League is a fun way for people that have never played the sport to come out and experience how fun the game is,” said William Racule, Director of the Touch Rugby League, “But it’s also a good chance for the seasoned player to really play some quality, organized touch rugby.”

Matches kick-off tomorrow, July 14th at Lehi’s Xango Field at 5.20pm for both divisions.

Take the jump to read more.
The season runs until the end of September with champions being crowned for both divisions. This year’s champion in the Men’s Elite Division will however be given a berth to the USA Touch National Championships held in Orlando, FL October 13th-15th.

Last year’s champions for the Corporate Co-Ed Domo will look to defend their title against the likes of Silicon Slopes companies of Adobe, Proofpoint and others.

While the Untouchables on the Men’s Elite side proved to be just that last year after winning a hard fought championship match against the Utah Old Boys.

Most teams have returned, with new ones being added into the mix for the 2016 season. Overall, Racule says the TRL is growing steadily and will look to expand in the coming years.

“We’ve added some more teams this year,” he said, “Which is great. And we’ve also added more trained referees and it’s our goal to bring the TRL to other communities in Salt Lake and Davis Counties next year. We’re really excited about the future.”

Stay tuned to Rugby Utah’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels for Touch Rugby League updates.

Waldouck To Have Newcastle Trial

$

Since joining Ohio mid-season Dom Waldouck has been one of the key players for the Aviators on their run to a showdown with Denver for the title. The center had over 100 appearances in the Premiership before injuries derailed his career a bit. Now after a successful stint in PRO Rugby Waldouck has gained a one month trial with Newcastle.

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said in a Newcastle press release: “Dom is going to come on trial with us for a month to see how he goes. He is playing over in the USA at the moment in their new tournament, he comes to us in late July and will be with us throughout August. Dom has been on the Aviva Premiership circuit for a while, six or so years ago he was going to be the next big thing but a couple of injuries have hampered his progression. He has now played two or three seasons without significant injury and seems to be back into the groove, so it could end up being an opportunity which suits both parties.”

Take the jump to read more.
The trial starts in August after the end of the PRO Rugby season.

Fans shouldn't be too surprised by a move like this. Sure, if you are an Ohio fan this isn't probably the greatest news because it means you'll be missing one of your best players next season if he makes the cut. At the same time, this is exactly the type of thing that PRO Rugby can use to their advantage. Waldouck arguably wouldn't have caught the eye of the Falcons if he hadn't come to PRO Rugby. The competition gave him a chance to play and excel showing that he is over his injuries.

If things go well you can expect more players to try and do the same which is only going to raise the level of the competition. Also, don't be surprised if you see more players get trials in Europe.

U.S. In Discussions For Pacific Challenge Tournament

$

0

The U.S. are reportedly in negotiations to participate in an "A" side tournament featuring the U.S., Canada, Fiji, Samoa, Uruguay, and Argentina. The competition would be held in October during a similar time frame to the old Americas Rugby Championship before that tournament was expanded to include Chile and Brazil and moved to the Spring. Uruguay would reportedly host the tournament that would take place over the space of about a week.

However, from what TIAR understands from multiple sources this tournament is not finalized and nothing has been signed off. That said, a tournament like this serves the needs of all the teams involved, especially as a selection vehicle for the November internationals. The main sticking point appears to be money and unless World Rugby is going to kick in some it's going to be hard for all the countries to participate.

If it comes off the U.S. will have another opportunity to get top domestic players solid game time. Not only did they have a chance to play in the ARC but they've also had PRO Rugby this year. Throw in a three match competition in Uruguay and that's a full season. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

Glendale U-20s Taking Shape

$

Press Release

Fielding the top teams in in the Pacific Rugby Premiership and Women’s Premier League apparently isn’t enough for the Glendale Raptors.

The Raptors now have their sights set on fielding a championship Under-20 squad, which is part of a larger initiative to develop championship-caliber players as young as 5 years old through the Glendale Raptors Rugby Academy. Additionally, USA Rugby recently identified the need to retain high school graduating rugby players and this provides that opportunity to bridge the gap between men’s club rugby and school rugby.

The values-driven GRRA is the product of years of coaching development and expertise. It expands upon existing Raptors youth programs with a more aggressive, focused approach, creating a European-style academy program that offers a pathway of development that players can trace from kindergarten to the pros.

Take the jump to read more.

The Glendale Raptor Rugby Academy will form a U20 men’s program to begin competition this fall, 2016, in a newly formed competition for U20’s and university JV programs in the West Conference. The Raptors U20 team will compete against the Air Force Academy, Colorado, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming along with other local college programs. Practice starts August 11th, 2016.

The newly formed coaching staff will be comprised of:

• Head Coach Mark Bullock Director of Rugby

• Manager: Eric Geib, Glendale Raptor Rugby Academy

• Attack Coach Ethan Pougnet, Glendale Raptor Rugby Academy

• Strength and Conditioning Coach Nico Rithner, Raptor Rugby Academy

• Mental Skills Coach Katie Wurst, First15 Sport Performance

• Medical Coordinator Amy Valenta, Head Physiotherapist USA Rugby

• And more...

“The Glendale Raptors U20 program is an opportunity to close the gap between college and club rugby for those players who do not enroll immediately into a university rugby program,” Glendale director of rugby Mark Bullock explains. “This completes the pathway from youth to adult to pro to national team that the Glendale Raptors Rugby Academy can offer to aspiring rugby players.”

The U20 program will serve as both a continuation and final stage of the current GRRA curriculum, which has served young rugby players from the K-8 level up to the U16 and U18 levels.

The GRRA comprises a host of programs designed for youth as young as 5, with hopes they will graduate from youth teams to the high school team to the U20 team and eventually the first-team. Glendale coaches have spent years developing a values-driven program that progresses, from teaching rugby fundamentals to grade-school children to teaching high-level skills such as in-game awareness, tactical thinking, and leadership in addition to fundamentals.

Interested players should contact Mark Bullock, Director of Rugby at bullock@glendale.co.us or at 303-639-4710.

PRO Rugby Power Rankings: Ohio & Denver Still On Top

$

Our latest PRO Rugby Power Rankings are in and once again Ohio and Denver are one and two. However, Sacramento also move up the table as does San Francisco at the expense of San Diego.

1. Denver (8-3-0, 42 points; LW: 1, beat Sacramento 41-31): The Ohio offense was in full stride once again in Sacramento but it wasn't a perfect performance from the Aviators. They will be especially disappointed that they took the foot off the gas and let the Express back into the match. They basically have the rest of the month off before they take on the Stampede and Memorial Park. They can either be a blessing as they get healthy or it could mess up their rhythm. Up next: Bye

2. Denver (8-1-0, 36 points; LW: 2, beat San Diego 59-23): Denver's offense hasn't always been on the same level as their defense this year but that didn't hold serve on Sunday against San Diego. Led by Will Magie the Stampede finally got things going and picked up a much needed bonus point. They are going to need to continue to pick up bonus points as they set up a final weekend showdown. Up next: Sacramento

3. Sacramento (2-7-0, 11 points; LW: 4; lost to Ohio 41-31): It was another loss for the Express but once again they showed a lot of improvement. The trend started when they came back from their long June break and it has them playing some terrific rugby at the moment. We fully expect them to pick up a couple of wins before the end of the season. They are definitely headed in the right direction. Up next: Denver

4. San Francisco (2-7-0, 12 points; LW: 5; Bye): San Francisco had the weekend off which is a good thing considering that they could use some rest. Like most of the teams in the competition they have gotten better as time has gone on. At the same time they are still missing one or two things that would make them great. Having Mils Muliaina back is going to help. Up next: San Diego

5. San Diego (4-6-0, 23 points; LW: 3; lost to Denver 59-23): The wheels are continuing to come off for San Diego. Yes, they did some things well against Denver, especially in the first half but overall they have endured a slide that few would have predicted to start the season. Injuries have taken their toll but they also aren't getting enough contributions from key players. Up next: San Francisco

PRO Rugby Weekend Rosters

The line-ups are in for this weekend's PRO Rugby matches and each team has been forced into some changes. For San Diego those changes go both ways. Taku Ngwenya is back at it after suffering a concussions while with the Eagles. That is excellent that the is cleared and able to be back on the pitch roughly a month after he went down and it will be big for San Diego to have his leadership return. However, the Breakers will be missing Kurt Morath to injury. His spot will be filled by the capable Kalei Konrad who has proven himself to be a solid player this year.

Their opponents on the weekend, San Francisco, have made some changes to the line-up themselves but overall have kept their line-up intact. The big news for them is that Mils Muliaina is still out with injury.

Both Denver and Sacramento have kept their line-ups close to intact. Denver have made a change in their forwards with Luke White at lock but the roster of the roster stays the same. Sacramento have added Eric Fry to their starters and bring back Garrett Brewer and Chris Saint.

Conor Kearns

College All-Americans head coach Gavin Hickie has named his tour squad for the team's upcoming trip to Australia and it's loaded with talent. Led by the likes of Dylan Audsley, Aladdin Schirmer, Deion Mikesell, Nick Boyer, and Cody Melphy the roster is ripe with up and coming talent that have either already been capped (Schirmer and Mikesell) or will likely be capped in the near future.

St. Mary's lead the way with five players on the team while BYU has four. There is also strong representation from Lindenwood and Life. Also on the team is Malon Al-Jiboori, who just spent a spell gaining experience down in Australia. PRO Rugby is represented on the team as well. Cody Jerabek from the Sacramento Express via the University of Wyoming and San Diego's Mason Pedersen, who played at Arizona and was a Junior All-American along with Al-Jiboori and Chance Wenglewski, are on the roster.

Another notable name is Conor Kearns, the lone overseas representative. Kearns has been a very steady presence for Trinity as they earned promotion to the top division in Ireland last season. He was a key player at fullback and has a great boot. The fact that he was once again willing to play for an American age-grade team is only a fantastic sign.

Overall, this is one of the strongest All-American sides in recent memory and they will have the opportunity to test themselves against good opponents down in Australia. The team will play the Darling Downs on August 6th (Australia time) followed by a match against Brisbane powerhouse Brothers on August 10th. They will then conclude their tour with a match against the Queensland Premier Barbarians on August 14th.

Squad: Malon Al-Jiboori (Lindenwood), Dylan Audsley (St. Mary's), Tanner Barnes (Central Washington), Niall Barry (UCLA), Alex Barton (St. Mary's), Roland Blackiston (CSU Long Beach), Zach Bonte (UCLA), Nick Boyer (Cal), Bryce Campbell (Indiana), Chad Gough (Utah), Wes Hartmann (Kutztown), Vili Helu (St. Mary's), Matt Jensen (BYU), Cody Jerabek (Sacramento Express/Wyoming), Tim Katz (James Madison), Conor Kearns (Trinity), Tua Laei (BYU), Alex Maughan (Life), Cody Melphy (Life), Deion Mikesell (Lindenwood), Kevin O'Connor (St. Mary's), Mason Pedersen (San Diego Breakers/Arizona), Mike Ruther (UMass-Amherst), Aladdin Schirmer (Central Washington), Alex Vorster (BYU), Dino Waldren (St. Mary's), Chance Wenglewski (Lindenwood), Calvin Whiting (BYU)

Preview: San Francisco Hosts San Diego

With only two and three matches remaining on their respective schedules neither San Francisco nor San Diego are in the hunt for the inaugural PRO Rugby title. However, that doesn't mean there isn't a lot on the line as the two teams square off today at Boxer Stadium at 6:00 p.m. et/3:00 p.m. pt. The Rush and the Express are in many ways headed in opposite directions. The Rush endured a very difficult start to the season losing their first five matches before finally claiming a big win over Ohio. Since then they've beaten San Diego while dropping a couple more matches. Still, in comparison to the beginning the season the Rush are playing much better rugby and look like a real threat to pick up some more wins.

San Diego are headed in the opposite direction. After looking like a title threat with early success in the season, including a close loss to Denver that could have given them strong position in the table, they have lost five in a row. Much of that time was without their internationals but even when they did return the Breakers looked sluggish, especially on the defensive end.

For each team the drive to next season begins now. San Francisco will want to continue to build on their momentum and give themselves a platform, especially on the fitness side of things, to excel next season. They have found some good players on the year and have had steady performances from the likes of Pila Iongi and Volney Rouse and if they can add some pieces next year they should be even stronger. Plus, they have been hit by the injury bug with Mils Muliaina and Jake Anderson out.

For San Diego it's about reconnecting with what went well early on in the year. Defensively they team has struggled mightily the last few matches. Losing Phil Mackenzie in the backs has been a big blow as has been the injury Hubert Buydens. It's a bit of a puzzle why the team has dropped off this year. International absences have certainly played their part and it may be fatigue setting in given that many of their players played heavy PRP seasons or played in the ARC. Still, more was expected out of this group.

Today's match should be a close one. Each team has threats in the front row, including back-rows that are big and will give teams trouble. In the backs there could be a lot of fireworks and a lot of scoring. The match-up between Devereaux Ferris and Volney Rouse against Charlie Purdon and Kalei Konrad is going to be fun to watch as is the center match-up between Orene Ai-i and Nick Blevins against Andrew Suniula and Ryan Matyas. Prepare for lots of fireworks.

Where this match could be decided is in the kicking game. Volney Rouse has been excellent on the year while Kalei Konrad has been good but has mostly given way to top scorer Kurt Morath. Whoever can out kick the other will likely win the match.

The game begins at 6:00 p.m. et/3:00 p.m. pt and will be streamed on prorugby.org.

Preview: Pressure On Denver Against Sacramento

The pressure is on the Denver once again to deliver a victory in order to assure a final showdown with Ohio to finish the season. Denver still have to matches left in order to get the job done beginning with Sacrament at CIBER Field on Sunday. It will be the last home match of the season for Denver with a trip to San Francisco coming up the following week. As things stand Denver have 36 points to 42 for Ohio. That means that if Denver pick up a win or at least two bonus points over their next two matches they will have a chance to surpass Ohio on the final day. That said, if Denver pick up bonus point wins in both of their remaining matches before the match against Ohio they will have a four point advantage, putting the pressure on the Aviators to beat them.

The Stampede are arguably coming off their best performance of the season. Against San Diego last week they scored over 50 points and had a good defensive day as well. Even though they only have one loss on the season to three for Ohio it's been bonus points that have helped Ohio. They have ten bonus points to only four for Denver. Having the offense click for the Stampede is going to help them pick up much needed points the next few weeks.

Denver return essentially the same team that beat San Diego last week. Their forward pack is as good as they come with arguably the best front-row and the best back-row in the competition. Hanco Germishuys has a beast last week while Peter Dahl and Pedrie Wannenburg are as good as they come. Additionally, the back line stays the same and will once again pack a punch. Will Magie has been in fine form and has done a great job of finding Timana Tahu, Mike Garrity, Chad Lond, and Ata Malifa in space to make things happen.

While Denver are certainly favored in the match it would be a mistake to count out Sacramento. The Express have been rejuvenated since their month long break in June. While they haven't won every match they've been competitive and have picked up another win along the way. Having Harry Bennett Back from injury has certainly helped and their offense has finally been able to find itself once again. Cody Jerabek and Alex Hodgkinson have been revelations in the back line and with Chris Saint and Garrett Brewer returning from injury the Express will have options.

The front-row for the Express also got a boost this week as Eric Fry will start once again for the club. Having his experience is going to be big against Chris Baumann. Personally for Fry it's an opportunity to show that he should be starting in an Eagles shirt, something that didn't happen in the June internationals. Also in the forwards the back-row of Kyle Sumsion, John Quill, and Langilangi Haupeakui is going to challenge Denver.

Overall this should be a tight match. Denver will likely win in the end but don't expect it to be a blowout. Both teams have excellent kickers and will pick up points wherever they can but you can also expect a bunch of tries.

The match starts at 5:00 p.m. et/3:00 p.m. mt/2:00 p.m. pt and can be see on prorugby.org.

Surprise Trio Make The Cut As Eagles Name Rio Squad

Chris Wyles, Andrew Durutalo, and Nate Ebner have made the cut as the Eagles have named their squad for the Olympics. They join regular Sevens Series veterans Madison Hughes, Zack Test, Folau Niua, Danny Barrett, Garrett Bender, Make Unufe, Perry Baker, Carlin Isles, and Ben Pinkelman on the roster. While Durutalo's selection is less of a surprise given his key presence on the Eagles over the past few years before playing Super Rugby this year the selections of both Wyles and Ebner--Wyles hasn't played on the Series in years while Ebner only played sparingly this year--are more of a surprise. That said, the lengthy Olympic camp gave them a chance to get 7s fit and show what they can do.

The rest of the squad is the core of the team that has played on the Sevens Series. Madison Hughes, who will captain the team, Zach Test, Folau Niua, and company of blossomed into stars over the last few years, even winning the London 7s in 2015. This group of players has essentially played every tournament together over the last two years and that familiarity is only going to help them next month.

The team will head to a camp in Florida for a week where they will scrimmage with New Zealand. Traveling with the team in an effort to make one of the three reserve spots (there is a chance to swap out players during the tournament) are Nate Augspurger, Will Holder, Martin Iosefo, Thretton Palamo, and Shalom Suniula. Each of those players has deep experience on the Series.

"It's a huge honor to represent your country at any time in your life, but to be given the responsibility at the Olympic Games - the biggest sporting event on the planet - makes it even more special," said head coach Mike Friday in a U.S.A. Rugby press release. "The fact that we will be part of Team USA and that as a result we will be exposing the USA sporting public to another team sport they can engage with and enjoy watching, as well as passionately support their country, is immense.

"The boys fully appreciate the accountability that comes with that responsibility and are looking forward with confidence to those challenges. While we are not the pre-tournament favorites like Fiji who have to play with that expectation, we are a team who are hugely respected and feared by all other countries as genuine contenders. We know that on any given Sunday we have the power, pace and physicality to match and beat anyone. The boys recognize the magnitude of the task but are confident that we can be medal contenders if we play to our ability. We will represent the people of the USA in a way that they expect and deserve, exhibiting the characteristics that will make them proud."

The team travels to Brazil on August 1st with pool play beginning on August 9th.

Squad: Madison Hughes, Zack Test, Folau Niua, Danny Barrett, Garrett Bender, Maka Unufe, Perry Baker, Carlin Isles, Andrew Durutalo, Chris Wyles, Nate Ebner, Ben Pinkelman

Reserves (three will travel to Rio): Nate Augspurger, Will Holder, Martin Iosefo, Thretton Palamo, Shalom Suniula

Women Eagles head coach Richie Walker has named his team for the Rio Olympics and it includes experiences players from the Women's Sevens Series. There aren't any surprises on the roster as each of the players has been a familiar fixture with the team over the last few years. Leading the team into Rio will be veterans Lauren Doyle, Jillion Potter, Vix Folayan and Kelly Griffin. Jessica Javelet and Alev Kelter, both of whom were brought into the program a couple of years ago after playing for the U.S. in other sports, also make the team. Kelter in particular has become a key contributor to the squad as their go-to kicker and an excellent defender.

Rounding out the team are Bui Baravilala, Ryan Carlyle, Nana Fa'avesi, Carmen Farmer, Kathryn Johnson, and Richelle Stephens. All of the players have significant experience on the Women's Sevens Series that includes several trips to finals.
