Lions Tour

The Lions scored early and and never looked back as they defeated the Wallabies 41-16 in Sydney last Saturday to win their first series since their tour of South Africa in 1997. The Lions were on the front foot from the opening kick as they took advantage of two Australian mistakes to get their first try through Alex Corbisiero. Leigh Halfpenny, who was arguably the Lions best player on the tour, hit four first half penalties to give the Lions a 19-3 lead. Christian Leali'ifano hit a penalty for the Wallabies. It looked as if the was how it would stay going into the break until James O'Connor scored to put the Wallabies back into the match. 19-10 to the Lions at halftime.

In the second half Leali'ifano got Australia on the board early with a penalty but it was all the Lions from that point. Halfpenny hit another penalty and then in the 56th minute the Lions put on a great display of passing that sprung Jonathan Sexton for the try. Halfpenny was at the center of the action once again in the 64th minute when he made a great break and a nice pass to spring George North for the Lions third try. Jaime Roberts would score only three minutes later to seal the match and the series.

Super Rugby

The Australian teams were idle but the rest of the Super Rugby teams were up and running once again. The Bulls hold the top spot in the competition after they narrowly beat the Sharks 20-19. Bjorn Basson and Jano Veermaak scored tries while Morne Steyn hit two penalties. Pat Lambie had a try and three penalties for the Sharks while Odwa Ndungane also scored but two missed conversions came back to hurt the Sharks. Also in South Africa, Deon Fourie scored two tries as the Stormers beat the Southern Kings 24-12. The Stormers are in third place in South Africa and are just outside a playoff spot overall. Right above them in the South Africa table are the Cheetahs, who beat the Blues 34-13.

In New Zealand, the Highlanders have picked up their third win of the season after they beat the Hurricanes 49-44. Six different players scored for the Highlanders while five scored for the Hurricanes. The playoffs will be difficult to reach for both teams. The same can't be said for the Chiefs and the Crusaders. The Chiefs have the better record of the two teams but it didn't matter this last week as the Crusaders were easy 43-15 winners. Kieran Read scored twice to lead the team.
