Here We Go Again, More Super Rugby Expansion Talk

It seems that momentum is gaining for a change to the world calendar. Big stars like Richie McCaw and Jonathan Sexton have come out in favor of the change, as has the Premiership. Another voice to favor the change is South African Rugby Players Association CEO Piet Heymans. In coming out in favor of the proposal Heymans has also proposed that Super Rugby expand to 18 teams. His logic is that having more teams will allow the competition to play less games (presumably with less out of conference games).

It's not surprising that when he mentions expansion he suggests that South Africa be granted a sixth franchise. Think about it. In his position he is looking to satisfy all of his members, including those on the Lions and the Southern Kings. South Africa has long sought a sixth franchise and this seems like a new angle for their push. He also mentions a sixth team for New Zealand teams from other countries (excuse his math). He doesn't not specifically name the U.S. as one of the other countries but with recent rhetoric it's a strong implication.

What does this mean for the chances of Super Rugby expanding to North America? Not much. It's easy to get worked up thinking suggestions like what Heymans made is momentum for another franchise but this is really an official in South Africa trying to watch his back. That doesn't mean that moving the global calendar won't affect the U.S., it certainly will and in probably many unforeseen ways.

The best hope for professional rugby in the country at the moment isn't a Super Rugby franchise (although I don't know many would turn it down) but a home grown league with solid financial backing.
