Super Rugby

And then there were four. Both the Brumbies and Sharks advanced to the Super Rugby semi-finals with wins over the weekend. Going out of the competition are two New Zealand sides--the Chiefs and the Highlanders. The Brumbies were the first to punch their ticket as they beat the Chiefs 32-30 in Canberra. The Brumbies made their presence known early as tries from Nic White, Robbie Coleman, and Jesse Mogg put them up 19-3 with twenty minutes gone. The Chiefs would come back with tries from Bundee Aki, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, and Tim Nanai-Williams, who had an early yellow card that allowed the Brumbies to get out early, to make it 32-25 with only twenty minutes left. The Chiefs then had a chance to tie it at the end but Gareth Anscombe's 76th minute try went unconverted.

The other match saw the Sharks beat the Highlanders 31-17. Like the Brumbies, the Sharks went ahead early with Marcell Coetzee scoring in the 12th minute to go along with penalties from Morne Steyn. That put the Sharks up 13-3 with 29 minutes gone. however, tries from Malakai Fekitoa and Kane Hames gave the Highlanders a 17-13 lead at the break. In the second half the Sharks turned it on with tries from Bismarck du Plessis and Tondi Chavhanga. The Highlanders picked up a try from Phil Burleigh. In total Steyn had four penalties, including a couple in the last few minutes to ice the game, while Lima Sopoaga had two.

International

The BC Bears claimed a major scalp as they beat Uruguay 21-20 in Montevideo. Brock Staller had two tries in the match while Sean Ferguson had one. Uruguay missed a penalty at the end that would have given them the win. Kenya A took home the Elgon Cup after beat the Uganda Rugby Cranes 34-0. That made the aggregate score 48-21.
