It was not the offseason drama that the Seattle Saracens but over the weekend the team learned that they confirmed as members of the BC Rugby Union for the upcoming season. For those not aware, the Saracens play in the British Columbia leagues because of the high standard of competition and geographic proximity (Vancouver is only 2 1/2 hours from Seattle). After missing out on promotion to the CDI Premier League, the top competition in Canada and possibly North America, the team secured promotion this year.
However, this is where it got sticky. Earlier in May a motion was put forth by the BCRU Board of Directors would have limited all BC competitions to teams from British Columbia. Seattle has been a member of the BCRU for decades. That motion went before all the clubs (each club has a different amount of votes based on membership) where it was defeated. According to BC Rugby News only five teams voted to support the motion. Had the team been booted out of the competition the club would have had to find a way to play only DI in the new Pacific Northwest division, the PRP, or another competition on the men's side and a new competition on the women's side.
