U.S. vs. Russia: Eagles Player Grades

Overall, most players on the Eagles did well in our player grades. The Russia match was the one of the most complete matches they have played all year. That said, there is still room for improve, particularly among a few players.

Nick Wallace (6): In the open field and on defense Wallace continues to develop. His scrummaging could use some work but most of the front-row had problems on Saturday. He seemed tired after two months of rugby (expected) but overall capped off a nice run of matches.

Phil Thiel (6.5): Another nice match from Thiel. His pass to set up Dolan for the final score was excellent. He's hardly been off the pitch in his six matches this fall which is a great testament to his conditioning. It looks like he's locked up the hooker spot for the foreseeable future.

Titi Lamositele (6): For an 18 year old he did well on his starting debut. He is already one of the best tacklers on the team. He still has things to learn in the scrum but time at Saracens will only help that. Offensively could have been a little more involved.

Tai Tuisamoa (7): Fantastic full cap debut. Defensive he was a monster paired with Samu Manoa. Russia were constantly stopped at or behind the gainline and much of that was due to Tuisamoa. His soft basketball hands are also a huge asset on offense.

Samu Manoa (7.5): Our Man of the Match. Manoa was brilliant all day on both offense and defense. He left a few Russians crumpled on the ground with big tackles. His Jonah Lomu-esqe try was something to watch as well. The more time he gets with the Eagles the better he gets.

Todd Clever (7): It as another nice match from Clever. His change of position has been a perfect move for him. He's free to make tackles and his energy level has improved.

Scott LaValla (6): Maybe it was the injury layoff or something else but LaValla had a fairly quiet match. That is not to say he wasn't effective or an asset, just that something was a bit off. We have no doubt that come next spring he will be his usual self.

Cam Dolan (6.5): Very fitting to cap off his recent string of games with a try. Dolan has been the revelation of the fall and has allowed others players to move to more effective positions, making the team better. If Dolan doesn't get any professional offers soon we'd be shocked.

Robbie Shaw (6): Not Shaw's best match. That happens when you only have limited time to train with the team.

Tim Maupin (7): It says a lot about the qualities that Maupin brings when he is keeping Luke Hume off the pitch. Defensively Maupin is extremely solid and against Russia we saw what he can do offensively.

Adam Siddall (6.5): Siddall wasn't as fluid as he was against Georgia and had a few errant passes, but that said he was still very effective and brought spark to the U.S. attack. Aside from one missed conversion he was once again perfect from the tee.

Andrew Suniula (7): Offensively Suniula had one of his best performances in a long time. He had one run to set up a try and nearly had another in the second half. It's great that he'll be seeing time with Wasps.

Folau Niua (7): Last week we weren't quite sold on Niua at center but against Russia he changed our minds. Defensively he brought a lot to the squad while he also brought creativity out wide.

Blaine Scully (6): A fairly quiet game by Scully's standards. He'll be disappointed not to have recovered Siddall's kick that would have been a try. He was good in the air as always but had a hard time getting involved offensively.

Chris Wyles (7): Wyles gets better by the game. Once again he was a leader for the Eagles when they needed it. Most importantly, he is delivering points. The Eagles have needed try scoring all summer and now they are getting it in large part due to Wyles.

Bench

Eric Fry (6): Came on for Lamositele at halftime and played well. Scrum still a problem but he was active in the open field once again.

Shaun Davies (5.5): After coming on for Shaw in the 52nd minute Davies seemed a little lost. He did some things very well but at the same time also had problems with his distribution.

Olive Kilifi (6): Kilifi came in for Wallace and stabilized the scrum a bit. He still needs to find a way to be more active elsewhere.

Derek Asbun (6.5): Asbun is everything you want in a player. After coming in for Tuisamoa in the 65th minute he did what was asked of him and helped shore up the win.

Seamus Kelly (6.5): Kelly made a nice impact after replacing Niua in the 70th minute. With the centers in flux this year he needed to come in and show he can change the game in a short amount of time, which he did.

Luke Hume (NA): There wasn't enough time for Hume to really make an impact.

Graham Harriman (NA): Like Hume, not enough time to receive a grade.
